About the ski resort Flachau
Flachau – Ski Destination Where Legends Are Born
Flachau gets a lot of pres because it is part of one of Austria’s biggest ski areas—that alone is enough to attract a ski-happy crowd. Flachau is part of the Salzburger Sportwelt Amade ski area, with Flachauwinkl, Wagrain and Kleinarl, in turn interlinking Alpendorf and Zauchensee.
Many Europeans generally and Austrians specifically know the area because of Herman Maier (Herminator), the Olympic (and World) Champ. Skiing in Austria, and Flachau itself, is second to none: 41 ski runs covering some 111 km; 2 black runs, 9 red runs, 6 blue runs and 1 green run make blue and red skiers love Flachau; the right ski pass opens up a whopping 1200 km of pistes, one of the largest in Austria.
One slope is 6 km long with a vertical drop of more than 1170 meters. Drag, chair, cable lift and gondola take skiers and boarders to the top of 2000 meters, the maximum altitude.
The snowboarding world has, of course, heard of the Riegler sisters, Manuela and Claudia, who come from Flachau. New or augmented snow makes the fun park and half pipe a real treat, where boarders are welcomed openly. Airport transfers from Salzburg airport (73 km away) is by bus or private car hire. Flachau, like the rest of Austria, turns into an outdoor Mecca in the summertime as well.
