Katschberg has become a bit of a hidden marvel in recent times among other ski resorts for a number of reasons. It's not big enough to contend with the super resorts, having only 16 ski lifts but for first-time visitors they are often nicely surprised to discover a sophisticated lift network system serving extensive snowsure skiing access across to peaks. The skiing season normally lasts from mid-December to a week after Easter thanks to the cutting-edge snowmaking machines which are able to cover the whole resort.
The ski resort covers two mountains - those at Katschberg (2020m) and at Aineck (2220m) and is made up of 66km of incredibily well maintained ski trails with the longest section being 8km running from the top of Aineck Mountain to the village below of St. Margarethen and is perfect for families of all abilities.
Katschberg is mostly a ski-in ski-out resort and has one of Austria's most beautiful and rewarding runs, the newly made A1 "autobahn", a straight and constantly downward, snow-covered piste running all the way from the Aineck peak to Lungau - 6km non-stop if you're in the mood.
Its ski runs are mostly made up of red runs with the Tschaneck side of the resort is a paradise for intermediates with all the runs eventually making their way back to the village. There are also a number of runs closer to the village with are more than suitable for beginners and those finding their feet again.
It's also an adventure for the whole family - night sledding! Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and during the high-season daily, you can enjoy sledding down the 1.5km slope, down the floodlit valley.
The resort is surprisingly cosmopolitan and is known for a having a loyal clientele, returning year after year. Britons, interestingly make up 5% of the total visitors each year.
Eating out & Nightlife
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from all offerings European and International cuisine. The nightlife can be as varied as you would like it to be, with a club and several bars putting on live music during the week. It's certainly not party central here but there are plenty of options to keep you entertained whilst off the slopes.
About the ski resort Katschberg - Rennweg
Katschberg – Rennweg – Sunnier and Snowier Austria Ski Holidays
The Lungau ski area houses the Katschberg-Aineck-Rennweg (part of Carinthia) ski area. Though the area has an abundance of snowy slopes to offer both skiers and boarders, the inclusive ski pass gives access to Fanningberg and Brobeck Speiereck, where snow is guaranteed.
The skies are always sunny and slopes are always covered in a fine dusting of powdery snow. If not, Katschberg - Reenweg can cover near all its slopes with machine-made flakes. The slopes around the 2000-meter mark (the highest is 2200 meters) generally get pounded, while the areas toward 1640 meters (the lowest point) do sometimes need snowmaking assistance.
There are 30 ski runs unfurled over 66 km of pistes. The longest slope travels for 6 km, a drop of about 550 vertical meters. The slope breakdown for beginners, intermediate and experts is 6 blues, 18 reds and 6 blacks. Intermediate skiers will have the most slope selection, with intermediate Katschberg skiing offering up nearly four times the kilometers of skiing when compared to the blue and black runs.
The cost of skiing and snowboarding (half pipe, fun park and jumps amok) varies with the low, mid, and high season. Most anytime, however, skiers will pay 150 Euros to 200 Euros as an adult.
Katschberg - Rennweg Accommodation:
Three and four star hotels dot Katschberg, as visitors keep coming more and more every year.
