Katschberg - Rennweg - Sunnier and Snowier
Austria Ski Holidays The Lungau ski area houses the Katschberg-Aineck-Rennweg ski area (part of the Carinthia) . Though the area has an abundance of slopes to offer both to skiers and snowboarders, the
inclusive ski pass gives access to Fanningberg and Brobeck Speiereck, where snow is guaranteed.
The ski resort is almost always sunny and the slopes are practically
always covered in powder snow. If not, Katschberg - Reenweg can cover nearly all of its slopes with machine-made flakes. The slopes around the 2000-meters -
the highest slope is at 2200 meters - generally get pounded, while the areas towards 1640 meters (the lowest point) sometimes need machine assistance.
There are
30 ski runs with
over 66 km of pistes.
The longest slope offers 6 km and a drop of app. 550 meters. There are slopes for all types of skiers: beginners, intermediates and experts. In total there are
6 blue,
18 red and
6 black slopes. Intermediate skiers will have the best slope selection, with the Katschberg intermediate ski slopes offering nearly four times the kilometers when compared to the blue and the black ones.
The cost of
skiing and snowboarding (
half pipe, fun park and jumps hammock) varies according to the low, the mid and the high season. Most of the time, however,
adult skiers pay 150 to 200 Euros.
KATSCHBERG - RENNWEG ACCOMMODATION: Three and four star hotels are common in Katschberg, as increasingly more visitors keep coming every year.
The prices are similar to those in the French resorts, although discounts start occurring later in the season.
Katschberg Rennweg Alpine chalets, such as the
Alpine Chalet (MATSBG) and
apartments, pretty much like the
Appartementanlage Thermenblick are the best choice, as many are practically located next to the lifts.

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT
Katschberg has become a bit of a hidden gem in recent times among other ski resorts for a number of reasons. It is not big enough to contend with the super resorts, having only 16 ski lifts but first-time visitors are often pleasantly surprised when discovering a sophisticated lift network system serving extensive snow-reliable skiing access across to peaks. The skiing season normally lasts from mid-December until the week after Easter thanks to the cutting-edge snowmaking machines which are able to cover the whole resort.
The ski resort covers two mountains - those at Katschberg (2020 m) and at Aineck (2220 m) and is made up of 66 km of incredibily well maintained ski trails with the longest section of 8 km running from the top of Aineck Mountain to the village below St. Margarethen and is perfect for families and skiers of all levels.
Katschberg Rennweg is mostly a ski-in/ski-out resort and has one of Austria's most beautiful and rewarding runs, the newly made A1 slope, which is a straight and snow-covered slope running all the way from the Aineck peak to Lungau, 6 km in total.
Katscheberg Rennweg ski runs are mostly made up of red runs with the Tschaneck side of the resort being a paradise for the intermediates with all the runs eventually returning to the village. There is also a number of runs closer to the village which are more than suitable for beginners and those making their comeback to the slopes.
Night sledding is also an adventure for the entire family! Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and daily during the high-season it is possible to enjoy while sledding down the 1.5 km slope through the floodlit valley.
The resort is surprisingly cosmopolitan and is known for a having a loyal clientele, returning year after year. The British, interestingly, represent 5% of all visitors each year.
Eating out & Nightlife
There are numerous restaurants offering the European and the international cuisine. The nightlife is as varied as you want it to be, with a club and several bars with live music during the week. Katschberg is certainly not the party centre, but there are plenty of options to keep you entertained whilst off the slopes.
