Nassfeld Hermagor
By plane
The nearest airport to Nassfeld and probably the most easiest is Klagenfurt, about 55 miles by car, shuttle bus or taxi. There are discount flights from London Stansted to Klagenfurt via Ryan Air and, for those arriving by plane, there is a free shuttle bus service to Nassfeld from the airport - about 90 minutes. A taxi can be booked through Karnten Transfer (www.kaernten-transfer.at). Bookings should be made before you fly and the taxi firm will still have a driver waiting if your flight is delayed.
Less obvious but also fairly close by (90 miles / 145 km) is Ljubljana in Slovenia. EasyJet flies there direct from London Stansted. If neither Klagenfurt nor Ljubljana is convenient, then the next best alternatives are Salzburg or Munich, Salzburg being the nearer of these to Nassfeld. Karnten Transfer also operates transfer services from Ljubljana and Salzburg to Nassfeld.
By train
From Klagenfurt you can take a train to Villach and from Villach to Hermagor where you can then take a bus to Nassfeld/Tropolach. You should be able to book online through rail Europe.
By car
Nassfeld is pretty easy to reach by car, especially if you first fly across and then hire a car at one of the nearest airports. It's 55km from Klagenfurt, 90km from Ljubljana, 200km from Salzberg and 291km from Munich. To plan your route, you can use one of many online route planners which are available. We've added one here to get you started.
With 30 lifts, 110 km of pistes, 80 km of cross-country ski trails, 55 km of winter walking tracks, 5 toboggan runs and 55 hectares of natural sheet ice we couldn't think of any reason not to come here. There are 11 km of slopes for advanced skiers, 69 km for intermediate and 39 km for beginners. Nassfeld also has the longest floodlit piste in Europe - with a length of 2.2 km and is open every Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is also a certified FIS race track. It enjoys a reputation as one of the largest, most attractive and snowy ski areas in Austria.
It is the biggest resort in the province of Carinthia, the most southern ski resort in Austria and right on the Italian border with the longest gondola ski lift (the 4-mile, 3-stage Millennium Express). It also has the longest floodlit run in the Alps, a section of the seven-mile Carnia run.
There are 3 different family skiing areas based around Kötschach-Mauthen, Weissensee and Weissbriach and all include winter walking trails, toboggan runs, ice skating, ski schools, hire and much, muc more.
Snowboarders tend to focus on the Garnitzen Alm area of the mountain - to the left as you look at the mountain - where there is a great terrain park and half-pipe. The Snowboard Arena has quarter pipes, high jumps and a snowcross park guaranteeing plenty of fun and action.
The higher and more advanced skiing is to the right beneath the Trogkofel at 2280 m. These slopes, with some well above the tree-line, are served by the Trogkofelbahn and Zweikofelbahn gondolas. The main nursery slopes are at Tressdorferalm, at 1590 m, which is beside the second station of the Millennium Express. Having the beginners' slopes area here means that novices can be assured of good snow and be in the sun instead of being down at the bottom of the mountain, often with poorer quality cover and in the shade. There are two beginners' lifts here too for easy progression.
Eating out & Nightlife
Most of the dining options are based within the hotels in the area. Dine at the highest Michelin 2* restaurant in Austria. If you love Italian then the Al Gallo Forcello is the obvious choice and for a more of an international dish then check out the Falkensteiner Carinzia at Tropolach. If your more of a meet person then The Barenhutte at Tropolach is great for ribs.
Apres skiing is found at the base of the Millenium Express where the Barenhutte is found. Here, you can party until the early hours and a lively crowd can be found also at the Cube Hotel, which also has its own night club. There are many huts dotted around the area and many hotel bars have apres ski. Hotel Sonnenalpe is among one of them. A lot of people also like to travel to Hermagor where there are also a number of lively bars.
About the ski resort Nassfeld Hermagor
Nassfeld Hermagor: A Vast Ski Vacation Destination
There are many great skiing resorts in Nassfeld Hermagor. However, not all make the top ten cut. Nassfeld Hermagor, however, seems to always make it to the "Top 10 Austrian Resorts" category. One reason that the Nassfeld luck does not run thin is the snow reliability of the place. Even during the global warming crisis gripping many other European resorts, Mother Nature dumps snow on Nassfeld every winter. Not to mention that ski pistes range from beginner, intermediate to world class.
The Millennium Express transports visitors throughout the Alp area, for this is the longest cable car in the Alps - this speaks of the modernity of the whole ski resort. Easily reachable from the Klagenfurt airport just 50 km away, Nassfeld Hermagor encompasses quite the category of ski runs: There are 37 runs, made up of 110 km in length. The longest slope is almost 8 km long and night skiing, a snowboarding park and tons of cross-country runs (91 km) with skate cross-country runs (24 km) make finding a slope for any level possible.
