Nestled in the foothills of the Austrian Tyrol leading up to the Arlberg pass, lies the pretty ski town of St Anton.
It is part of the larger Arlberg Ski Area and
has access to over 240 individual pistes. It is a great ski resort for all levels and abilities and this is one of the main reasons why
St Anton ski holidays are so popular.
Ski Arlberg (which St Anton is part of) boasts 85 ski runs with the largest amount being for intermediates with
138 km of red runs. Novices get the next best deal with 108 km of blue runs and experts get
30 km of seriously tough black downhill runs. The resort has
40 ski lifts which are able to transport 54,389 skiers every single hour to and from their destinations. The highest lift point transports you to over 2,800 metres, and as the resort Altitude is around 1,500 metres, you are pretty much guaranteed snow. On the rare occasions that snow isn't forthcoming St Anton has invested heavily in
over 418 snow cannons which will make sure that you get what you came for. On top of this, it’s also boasts some of the best off piste skiing that
Austria has to offer.
About the village
The resort is a mixture of modern and old buildings all crammed into the narrow valley overshadowed by the impressive
Valluga Mountain. The accommodation in St Anton is plentiful, with lodges, ski chalets and self catering apartments in abundance. If you would prefer a hotel, St Anton also has its fair share
ranging from 1 and 2 star cosy and comfortable, right up to the more
luxurious 4 star establishments.
The
apres ski scene here is very lively and is not for the faint hearted. There are a large number of bars which kick off at around 3 p.m. and keep going till the small hours. Bars such as the Heustadl, Senn Hutte and probably the
most famous apres ski destination in Europe, the Mooserwirt, are well worth a visit and will certainly get you into the party mood. There are a good selection of restaurants which serve everything from pizza and pasta, to full blown haute cuisine, so there is something to suit everybody's taste and budget.
St Anton has a pedestrian zone where you can find a wide variety of shops for your delight. Here you can find antique shops, jewellers, clothing boutiques, and the obligatory ski equipment outlets. Prices aren't cheap, but this is an exclusive area. Check out the local craft work such as the wood carving, it's a must!
There is a lot going on in St Anton. The Christmas classical concert in the Arlberg theatre is a must. The resort also has
2 ice rinks with ice hockey matches most weekends. If you fancy a bit of an adrenalin rush, then the floodlit toboggan run above Nasserrein will be right up your street. For something slightly more sedate, then why not take a romantic horse drawn sleigh ride through the forest.
