Wagrain ski area in Salzburg region, Austria houses several important skiing and snowboarding areas. It is part of the Salzburger Sportwelt Ski Area, with access to several famous ski areas such as Filzmoos, Flachau, Goldegg, St. Johann-Alpendorf, Zauchensee, Altenmarkt, and Kleinarl under one ski pass (that’s nearly 1200 km of slopes). When the snow doesn’t fall (unusual for this elevation), then 130 snow cannons bring flakes to 180 km of terrain that keeps skiers and boarders moving. The highest elevation is 2014 meters, so snow is generally reliable (and guaranteed with the snow machines) in almost all of the Wagrain. Salzburg is only 67 km away by car—that’s less than an hour as long as the roads are bulldozed and de-iced. A bus from the airport makes even the tightest of penny-pinchers able to get to the Wagrain skiing slopes. There are 25 ski runs in Wagrain, encompassing 35 km of slopes. The longest slope jogs for 8 km; this is the equivalent of losing 1160+ meters of elevation in one run. The division of the skiing is quite simple: 3 km of blues, 14 km of reds and 18 km of blacks. Snowboarding and cross-country skiing are fantastic, with the former ushering in freestyle and the latter opening up 220 km of trails.
