Mölltal Glacier: Austrian History, Open Air and Skiing

The Mölltal Glacier (a.k.a. Molltal Glacier or Mölltaler Gletscher) is located in Austria. The glacier is housed in the Austrian state of Oberösterreich, or Upper Austria. The near 1.5 million inhabitants call their capital Linz. On the whole, Upper Austria borders the Czech Republic and Germany to the north with Salzburg and Styria to the south.

Upper Austria has four distinct regions and fifteen districts, all of which are typically Roman Catholic with Yugoslavic, Turkish and Greek backgrounds. This Upper Section of Austria, though less than 10% of external origin, provide visitors a “melting pot” feel of being in several countries at once. The Upper Austria State has the third larges population in all of Austria. But, not to worry, as Upper Austria has the fourth largest land area, giving people the sense of openness and freedom, especially when on a skiing vacation.

When travelers vacation at Molltal Glacier, they are perplexed at all this scenery thrown into this one state. In both the summer and winter, Upper Austria becomes a hodgepodge of people dotting the landscapes. They come to cool off in the mountain streams, lakes and ponds; they come to ride and ski the billowing hills; they come to ride the Danube Cycle Path, cross-country ski and (ice) climb the noble mountains. Those who put nature second find escape in the historic villages; they watch the Danube flow slowly by; or, they simply go on some of the most scenic Sunday drives ever known.

Those who like the former times of the area will surely find pleasure in the monasteries and museums. If you happen to be into the outdoors and history, then take a hike through the valleys and along the mountain’s edge to discover mountain shelters used by animal herders, historic towns and enclaves of older times.

In the summer time, too, there are plenty of water sports on and near the Salzkammergut Lake District. Often, the lake and Danube River becomes one of the prettiest backdrops to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in all of Austria. Plus, when the paths become covered in snow, grooming machines come through making trails and paths that you can follow. Austrians inherently love the outdoors, and such passion comes through and is available for tourists on their vacation too.

The Molltal Glacier becomes a skier and boarder’s vacation paradise come winter. An early snow season gives way to an earlier influx of Austrian’s and outsiders who come to kick-start the ski season, sometimes as early as September or October. A one-day ticket is under 38 Euro and you can get a six-day ski pass for less than 180 Euro. The skiable hours tend to be early, as the possibility of night skiing is not possible. You can hit the slopes at the Molltal Glacier from Monday till Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm (Saturday and Sunday are the same).

The ski area has a total of 53 impressive kilometers, with a breakdown of 10 expert runs, 24 intermediate and 19 easy. Additionally, there are three high elevation skating and cross-country ski tracks. You’ll get over 10 km of winter hiking trails with four chairlifts, three surface lifts and 2 gondolas—that’s nine ways to get uphill! This allows over 14,000 skiers and boarders to ascend per hour. It’s easy to escape sea level here as the lowest point is 1200 meters and the highest point up on Shareck is 3122 meters.

Molltal Glacier Austria, furthermore, has a lot of outdoor snow fun. That is, you can ride a half pipe or go for loops in the Gletcher Fun Park. You can take toboggan rides and rent snowboards. You can even place your kids in one of the many child care centers, rent some skis and hit the FIS ski run or take classes at the local ski school. Try your skills with ice climbing or Alpine Curling. The list is as endless as the vistas you’ll get from atop the slopes. A vacation here allows everyone in the family to have a taste of something new, or something they already love.

If you come with your partner or family, you’ll find plenty of places to stay in Molltal Glacier and the surrounding areas. Though the season is longer than others, it’s best to book your Molltal Glacier accommodation well in advance, as when one person in Europe is on vacation, it seems that everyone else is too. Here, it’s possible to get an apartment or lodging for some respectable prices. However, if you’re wanting to entrench yourself into the total vibe of Austria and her mountains, then try letting a chalet, renting a cabin or leasing a cottage. For around the same price as renting an apartment, you could find yourself close to all the fun for just a few more euros.
