Isola 2000

Situated in the southern half of the French Alps is Isola 2000. It is only 100 kms from the Cote d'Azur, so it has easy access. The drive up from Nice is a stunning one that carries you up through steep gorges and high mountain passes and will take around one and a half hours. Built especially as a ski resort in the 1970's, Isola 2000 ski holidays have been very popular ever since.
The resort leans slightly towards the novice with 21 (59 kms) of blue runs. Intermediate skiers have 9 red runs (33 kms) to choose from, and experienced skiers have the option of 4 runs. (14 kms) There are also 7 nursery slopes for beginners.
There are 24 ski lifts transporting up to 20,000 skiers/snowboarders every hour and the highest lift travels up to a point of 2610 metres. It is said that from this point you can see the Mediterranean on a clear day. The resort altitude is at 2000 metres so you can pretty much guarantee snow. However there are 403 snow cannons on standby just in case. Isola 2000 opens the beginning of December and closes the end of April.
About the village
The majority of the bars and cafés (over a dozen) are located in the indoor arcade which the resort is built around. There is a great selection of eateries that give really good value for money. The apres ski scene here is probably not as lively as other destinations, however, if you like to unwind after a day on the slopes with a beer or two and a glass of wine and chill out, then this is perfect.
Accommodation in Isola 2000 offers really good value for money compared to its more glamorous counterparts and if you are looking for a hotel, Isola 2000 also has some really good 3 and 4 star options if you feel like pushing the boat out.
A full range of shops are available in the centre of Isola giving you everything from souvenirs to high fashion. There are also a number of obligatory ski wear stores as well as plenty of supermarkets if you happen to be self catering.
