Bormio is a charming town situated in Lombardy, in the heart of the Alps lying close to the Swiss border and with easy access to the Stelvio Pass. It is one of Italy's top ski resorts having risen to fame back in 1985 when it hosted the Alpine World Championships which was repeated again in 2005. Its huge vertical of 1792 metres makes Bormio one of the 3 highest in the country being beaten only by Cortina and Alagna. Bormio ski holidays gives a visitor access to 39 km of pisted ski runs of which almost half is covered by snow making facilities. The slopes are accessed by 24 ski lifts which can carry up to 13,724 skiers/boarders per hour. In addition to the slopes of Bormio, the relevant ski pass will open up access to the rest of the Alta Valtenni Ski Area with access to 112 individual pistes.
This resort is suited to all abilities of skier although there is not an awful lot to challenge the expert skier. There is minimal interlinking with the emphasis being more on reaching the top of the mountain and then enjoying a long, trouble free descent, often as much as 14 km, back to the resort. Skiers have a choice of two routes up, each from the edge of town. Intermediates will probably get the most enjoyment here, with long flowing slopes and easy fast routes. There is a snowpark for boarders who can benefit from the cable car which takes them up to the top of the giant vertical.

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT
Bormio is one of the few resorts that are steeped with history and much of the old town retains its historical charm from way back, with many preserved buildings with frescoes in the facades of several of the houses. In contrast the new town is very modern and upbeat. Bormio has a wonderful ambience surrounding it and is a wonderful resort in which to relax after a long day on the piste.
