Livigno – The No Tax Ski Holiday

Livigno in Italy used to be such a hard place to live and raise a family. Way back then in the 1800s, Italy gave special tax breaks to Livigno residents so that they would continue to live and work there. Secretly, however, they were also kept there to keep an eye on the boarders in case of intrusion of neighboring countries. Today, Livigno still enjoys the same tax-free status, but residents do pay a small income tax to the government. Visitors to the area, then, enjoy a one-of-a-kind tax-free ski vacation. The first people to live here were shepherds and farmers. Today, ski business owners and aprčs ski venues bring it quite a lot of money to the area. The easiest way to get to Livigno to enjoy some Italian skiing is through Milan, about 230 km off. The highest altitude is 3000 meters with a maximum vertical drop of just over 1000 meters. The ski runs number just over 75 with a 3.5 km descent and 115 km of ski runs in all. Night skiing makes it possible to ski under a blanket of beaming lights. The snowboarding in and around Livigno can’t be beat, with two parks at Mottolino and Carosello. The halfpipe, fun park, snowboard cross and jumps all offer a bruising challenge.
