From the Alps and the Dolomites in Northern Italy, to the Southern section of the Apennines in Calabria ans Sicily, Italy certainly offers an interesting landscape to skiers and other mountain sport enthusiasts. The most popular resorts are located in the North of the country, although the Southern regions also offer very interesting options.
Italian ski resorts offer much more than the traditional downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snow boarding. Among others, many resorts offer «sci alpinismo», which is a sport combining ski and mountaineering.
The five most popular resorts for ski vacations in Italy are Cortina d’Ampezzo, Canazei, Courmayeur, Madonna di Campiglio and San Martino di Castrozza. Cortina d’Ampezzo is considered as the Queen of the Dolomites: its most luxurious and expensive resort. In the lower portion of the Alps are found the resort Madonna di Campiglio, one of the best resorts for snow boarding. San Martino di Castrozza, on its part, is a smaller resort bordering the Parco Naturale Paneveeggio. Courmayeur has the Mont Blanc as a backdrop and is bordering the French Alps. It is possible to ride a cable car from there to the Punta Helbronner resort on the Mont Blanc. All resorts of course offer their visitors a taste of the local cuisine and wine.
In short, Italy has a resort for every need and desire!
