About the resort

Famous ski-resort at the feet of the Marmolada glacier, that with his 3.342 metre is considered the "Queen of the Dolomites", the highest mountain in the Dolomites. It represents one of the strategic connection points of the Dolomiti Superski carousel. The Marmolada is one of the most important reference points and development areas in the history of skiing. Already in the period following the First World War the glacier was frequented by hundreds of skiers. Then when a chair-lift (the very first in Italy) was built, in 1948, from the Fedaia dam to the Pian dei Fiacconi it attracted even more skiers. Despite the advantages of modern technology, reaching the summit was still very arduous; it took more than an hour from the valley to reach the ski facilities, then from the station up hill a further hour and a half to climb to Punta Rocca. So the idea of building another skilift took shape: in 1957 on the topmost slope of the glacier, a 500-metre long skilift was built, but it did not have the capacity to transport more than 4 persons at a time. A new phase of development began with the building of a cableway running from Malga Ciapela up to Punta Rocca. The works were commenced in 1965 and in 1968 the cableway became operative as far as Serauta; the final section was then completed in 1970. In December 1981 the new ski stations at Malga Ciapela came into operation: two skilifts, learning slopes and the Padon two-seater chair-lift, located between the ski stations of Marmolada and Porta Vescovo/Arabba. The Padon chair-lift was replaced in the summer of 2004 with a modern four-seater skilift with automatic coupling (2,000 p/h). Still in the summer of 2004, the first two sections of the cableway were replaced: Malga – Banc and Banc – Serauta (900 p/h). Specials 7th March 2008: Sellaronda Skimarathon, mountain climbing ski in dolomites, 14th edition, is a competition by night for teams of two persons, beacause of the difficulty level is reserved to expert skiers in this discipline. there is a trophy for who will win and the competition is also valis as proof of »Dolomites' Cup«. The route connects main villages of the four ladin valleys: Corvara, Arabba, Canazei and Selva. It's 42 km long and the height difference is 2700 metres. It's an exciting an hard competiton, that requires an hard training and capacity of adaptation to the course and to different weather conditions, but also for these characteristics is a competition like no other in the world.
